The 60-second phone test: is your website losing you calls?

Website tipsBy Frank SmithOctober 20, 20265 min read

Most business owners look at their own website on a laptop. Your customers find you on their phone, usually right when something breaks. Here's a one-minute test you can run right now.

Take out your phone, open your website, and set a timer for 60 seconds. Pretend you're a customer with a problem you need fixed today. Then go through these five checks.

1. Can you tell what the business does in three seconds?

The top of the page should say what you do and where: "Furnace repair in Park Ridge," not "Welcome to our website." If you have to scroll or read a paragraph to figure it out, so does every customer, and some won't bother.

Fix: rewrite your headline as "what you do + where you do it."

2. Can you call in one tap?

Tap your phone number. Does it start a call? If nothing happens, it's not set up as a link. If it's part of an image, it can't be tapped at all. And if the only number is in the footer, most people won't find it.

Fix: put a tappable call button at the top of every page. On phones, keep it visible as the page scrolls.

3. Does it load before you lose patience?

Count how long it takes before you can read anything. If it's more than a few seconds on cellular data, people leave. The usual causes are huge photos, autoplaying videos and too many plugins.

Fix: resize photos for the web, remove autoplay video from the top of the page, and remove anything you don't use.

4. Can you find the towns you serve?

A customer in Evanston wants to know you'll come to Evanston. If the site never mentions it, they'll wonder, and Google won't connect you with searches from that town either.

Fix: list your service towns in plain text, near the top or in a clear "Areas we serve" section.

5. Does anything make you trust it?

Real photos of your work, a few genuine reviews, how long you've been in business and whether you're licensed and insured. Stock photos and an old copyright year in the footer do the opposite.

Fix: swap stock photos for real ones, add your best reviews, and update the footer year.

How did you score?

If you passed all five, your site is ahead of most local businesses I look at. If you missed one or two, those are usually quick fixes. If you missed three or more, the site is probably costing you calls every week, and a rebuild may be cheaper than you think. My packages start at $399 setup and $49 a month, and you can see exactly what each one includes.

Common questions

Why should I check my website on my phone instead of my computer?

Because that's how most local customers find you, often in a hurry. A site that looks fine on a laptop can be slow, cramped or hard to call from on a phone.

What is a tap-to-call button?

A phone number set up as a link, so tapping it on a phone opens the dialer with your number filled in. It removes the step of copying or typing the number.

How much does it cost to fix a website that fails the phone test?

Small fixes like a tappable number or a clearer headline can take minutes. A full rebuild with Frank's Web Studio starts at $399 setup plus $49 a month.
